tourism in sweden

Tourism in Sweden accounted for a relatively small share of the Swedish economy in 2011 at 2.9% of the country's GDP; at that time, tourism generated SEK 264 billion, of which foreign visitors spent SEK 98.8 billion in Sweden. 7.1% of Swedish household income is spent on domestic tourism.[1] A well-known tourist route is the train from the south to the north of Sweden, visiting historical, natural and cultural attractions. This route is particularly popular with German tourists.

Swedish currency

The Swedish krona (Swedish: svensk krona) is the official currency of Sweden, code (kr or SEK) and is issued by Sveriges Riksbank. The Swedish krona is divided into one hundred eri (Swedish: öre) and its exchange rate is per US dollar = 8.3022 Swedish krona This currency was issued in 1981. One krona is divided into 100 ur (plural ur or urn in Swedish, and the former is still used with the contractual terms "50 ur", while the latter is preferred in contemporary language). However, all euro coins are no longer used since September 30, 2010. Pricing of goods in euros is still possible, but totals are rounded to the nearest crown when paying in cash. The word ur comes from the Latin urm (meaning gold).

Marked by mining, "present" Kiruna may not be the most aesthetically pleasing city, but it is a friendly place with the highest concentration of housing and restaurants in the northwest corner of Sweden. Its proximity to the vast, walkable wilderness and the terrain suitable for winter activities make it an excellent base.

The citizens of Kiruna (Jeron in Sami) had to live for many years with the news that their town was about to collapse into a huge iron mine. Fortunately, a solution is in the works: the construction of a new town 3 km to the east, with significant funding from the mining company. Although the existing town center will be almost entirely demolished, the historic church and clock tower will be moved.

Abisko

About 95 km northwest of Kiruna and near the border with Norway, the small outpost of Abisko seems very far from anywhere. And really, it's the call. It's prime hiking country, with big skies, sparkling lakes and acres of protected wilderness offering a welcome change from the industrial gloom of Kiruna. Abisko is at the northern end of the epic hiking trail called Kungsleden (the King's Trail), which winds through wild terrain for about 450 km en route to Hemavan, another small Swedish village. Basic mountain huts dot the trail every 10 to 20 km, so you can tackle the route (or just a small part of it, if you prefer) in relative comfort - you'll have a bed and stove, but there's no electricity or running water.

As pleasant as walking in these parts is, it is overshadowed by the fact that Abisko is the best place in Sweden to see the Northern Lights. The high latitude helps, but it's the mountains around here that seem to drive the clouds at night, increasing the chances of spotting the aurora. There's no guarantee you'll see the lights if you visit Abisko, of course, but the odds are relatively good outside of high summer and the displays can be phenomenal - this image above shows what we mean. The accommodation scene here is surprisingly lively, spurred on by the ever-increasing number of international tourists who arrive expecting a good show after dark. The main village, Abisko Östra, offers the largest selection of places to stay, as well as a small supermarket and bar. Meanwhile, Abisko Turiststation, which is 2 km to the northwest, houses the best hostel in Abisko. This large building also serves as a starting point for a multitude of summer and winter activities.
